Homeostasis

The tendency of biological systems to maintain stable internal conditions — such as temperature, pH, hormone levels, and blood pressure — through dynamic regulatory feedback mechanisms.

Also known as: Biological Equilibrium Physiological Balance

Homeostasis is maintained through negative feedback loops: when a variable drifts outside its set range, compensatory mechanisms activate to restore balance. Understanding homeostasis is fundamental to peptide research because administering exogenous compounds will often trigger homeostatic responses — the body counterregulates to offset the introduced signal.

For example, introducing exogenous GH secretagogues may initially elevate GH output, but sustained use can trigger compensatory downregulation of pituitary sensitivity. Researchers design cycling protocols and measure biomarkers precisely to work with homeostatic mechanisms rather than fighting against them.
